Each one is for a different scenario: the initial post-success ask, the gentle follow-up nudge, the video ask after an NPS-detected promoter moment, and the in-product trigger after a milestone. The full email is below each one, with the context, the why-it-works, and the when-to-use-it.

This page is the worked examples. The testimonial request templates page is the 5-part structure that underlies every email here. If you have ten minutes and one customer in mind, the structure page is the framework, this page is the working version.

Example 1: Initial ask, post-success

Hypothetical. Maya is a Head of Growth at Lumen Analytics. She switched her team to our reporting module three months ago and her team’s weekly reporting time dropped from 8 hours to 40 minutes. The email goes out two weeks after the renewal.

Subject: Maya, a quick ask about Lumen’s reporting time

Hi Maya,

When your team switched to the reporting module in March, the weekly reporting time went from 8 hours to 40 minutes. I have been talking about that number with other customers, and I would love to capture it in a short testimonial for our homepage.

Would you be open to writing 3-4 sentences about the time savings? It should take about 5 minutes. Here is a link to submit, and a one-question prompt: what changed for your team? [link]

No pressure if the timing is wrong. And thank you in advance, the case studies like this are the most useful thing we have.

[Your name]

Why it works: it names the specific moment (March, the time savings), it names the format (3-4 sentences), it gives a friction reducer (link + one-question prompt), it gives a time estimate (5 minutes), it closes with a no-pressure escape and a thank-you. The subject line is personal and specific, not clever. The permission-to-publish is implicit in the homepage ask but explicit enough.

Example 2: Follow-up nudge, gentle

Hypothetical. Daniel, a VP Customer Success at NorthStar, was sent the initial ask eight days ago. He has not responded. The follow-up goes out on day 10.

Subject: Re: Daniel, a quick ask about NorthStar’s customer success metrics

Hi Daniel,

Just floating this back to the top of your inbox. No rush, but the offer is still open if it makes sense.

If the timing is wrong, that’s fine. I can reach back out in a few months when the moment is right.

Thanks, [Your name]

Why it works: it is short (under 50 words). It re-uses the original subject line so the customer can find the original context. It gives the customer a no-pressure escape. It sets up the future follow-up. The follow-up does not add a new ask. The follow-up is a gentle reminder.

Example 3: Video ask, post-NPS

Hypothetical. Sarah is a Marketing Director at Helio Labs. She just answered the NPS survey with a 10. The video ask goes out the same day.

Subject: Sarah, would you record a 60-second video for our wall?

Hi Sarah,

You just gave us a 10 on the NPS survey. That is the highest score we have had this quarter, and I am writing to ask if you would put that into a 60-second video for our wall.

Most people record in 60-90 seconds, including one or two retakes. You can record on your phone, no production needed. Here is the link: [record link].

If video is not your thing, I would be equally happy with 3-4 sentences by email. Either way, thank you. The 10 on the survey was the high point of my week.

[Your name]

Why it works: it ties the ask to a specific moment the customer just had (the NPS 10, that day). It gives a clear time estimate (60-90 seconds). It lowers friction by saying “your phone, no production.” It offers an alternative (text), so the customer has a way out that still produces a testimonial.

It thanks the customer for the survey response, not just the future testimonial.

Example 4: In-product trigger, post-milestone

Hypothetical. Thea is a home cook who has just shared her 50th recipe in a cooking app. The in-product trigger fires the same day, on the success screen.

“Thea, you just hit 50 recipes shared. That is more than 99% of our home cooks. Would you take 2 minutes to share what the app has meant for you? Your testimonial will help other home cooks find the app. [Submit a quick testimonial here]”

Why it works: it fires in-product, at the moment of success. It names the specific milestone (50 recipes, 99th percentile). It gives a clear time estimate (2 minutes). It names the audience (other home cooks). It gives a single CTA (the link). It is short enough to read on a phone, in 5 seconds.

The 3 conversion patterns

The three patterns that show up across all four examples, and across most working testimonial request emails: the specific moment reference, the friction reducer, and the thank-you. Each one matters, and each one can be the difference between a 20% and a 50% response rate.

The three conversion patterns: timing, send, gratitude

The specific moment reference. The customer reads the email and recognizes the moment. The moment is named (a date, a metric, a milestone). The moment is theirs. The customer does not need to remember what happened. The customer does not need to reconstruct the value. The moment is in the email.

The friction reducer. The customer knows what to do next. The link is there. The format is named. The starter prompt is named. The customer does not have to figure out how to send, how to format, or what to write. The next step is one click and 5 minutes.

The thank-you. The customer feels acknowledged. The thank-you is not transactional. The thank-you names the gift (their time, their words, the survey response). The thank-you is the part that turns the email from a marketing ask into a relationship moment.

The 3 things to never do

The first thing to never do is the generic ask. “Would you write us a testimonial?” with no context, no format, no friction reducer. The customer does not know what to write. The customer does not respond.

The second thing to never do is the clever subject line. “We have a favor to ask” or “Quick question for you” or “You are amazing and we need your help.” The customer assumes marketing. The customer skips the email. A specific subject line that names the customer or the moment is the difference between an open and a delete.

The third thing to never do is the buried ask. The email is 400 words long. The testimonial request is in the third paragraph. The customer reads the first two paragraphs, decides the email is not relevant, and closes it. The ask goes in the second paragraph, or the second sentence of the email body.

The journey after this page

If you have the worked examples and want the 5-part structure underneath them, the testimonial request templates page is the framework that every email here is built on.

For the broader asking process (timing, follow-up scheduling, response tracking), the how to ask for a testimonial page is the lifecycle reference. For the questions to put in the request, the testimonial questions page has the prompts that produce specific answers. For the format the customer is being asked to produce, the types of testimonials page is the format typology.

For the parent cluster, the testimonial examples page is the gallery of good testimonials across formats. For teams that want the friction reducer in the form of a shareable collection link, Testivo is one tool that turns the request into a one-click customer submission, with text and video supported.

Four worked testimonial request emails, in full, for the four most common scenarios: post-success initial ask, gentle follow-up nudge, post-NPS video ask, and in-product milestone trigger.
